The Colorado Avalanche announced on Thursday its roster for Development Camp at Family Sports Center and the 2021 Rookie Faceoff in Arizona and it includes 16 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.
The lineup is made up of team rookies and prospects, amateur tryouts and players on American Hockey League contracts. Oskar Olausson, who was chosen at No. 28 overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, is one of the twelve Avalanche draftees participating in this year’s rookie tournament.
Olausson will be the only member of his draft class to compete in the Rookie Faceoff and he will be joined by two players selected in 2020 (Justin Barron, No. 25 overall; Jean-Luc Foudy, No. 75), five from 2019 (Bowen Byram, No. 4; Alex Newhook, No. 16; Alex Beaucage, No. 78; Sasha Mutala, No. 140; Trent Miner, No. 202), two in 2018 (Justus Annunen, No. 64; Sampo Ranta, No. 78) and one each from the 2016 (Nate Clurman, No. 161) and 2017 classes (Nick Henry, No. 94).
Six players on Colorado’s 2021 roster were also on the team’s 2019 squad in Anaheim. That list includes forwards Beaucage, Bowers, Henry and Mutala, defenseman Byram and goaltender Miner. Henry and goaltender Annunen also participated in the tournament in 2018 in Vegas.
The Avalanche rookies will play three exhibition games over the course of four days, Sept. 17-20, at Ice Den Scottsdale. The Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights are all sending top prospects to the annual showcase. Colorado opens the Arizona Rookie Faceoff versus the Kings on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. MT and then plays the Ducks on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. MT. The Avs close the exhibition on Monday, Sept. 20 with a 10 a.m. MT game against the Sharks.
Byram, Newhook and Ranta are the only players on the roster that have NHL experience. Byram suited up in 19 games with the Avalanche last season while Newhook dressed in six in the regular season and eight in the postseason. Ranta played in two contests in the playoffs.
All 28 players will be participating in Colorado’s Development Camp from Sept. 12-14. They will also practice at Family Sports Center on Thursday, Sept. 16 before heading to Arizona for the Rookie Faceoff.
